They say that moving is one of the most stressful times in your life – right up there with marriage, divorce, birth of children, death in the family, etc. etc. In the past, I always took moving in stride and never thought twice about it. This time around is much more stressful because for the life of me – I can’t find the wireless mouse for my laptop! Yes, that’s right – my mouse is missing and I have to resort to using the touch pad on my laptop. I know, I know – first world problems. It wouldn’t be so bad if I knew exactly which box it was packed into never mind that it was somehow packed in the first place!

Those of my clients and students who stay in regular contact with me know the process of packing has been taking place for the last several weeks; you just never really realize how much STUFF you have until it’s time to pack it up and move it some place. Suffice it to say that after looking at the stack of boxes sitting in the garage waiting to be moved, I will be going through each one of them at the new residence and performing a purge. I’m sure that I will either locate the missing mouse in the last box to be emptied or it will have somehow disappeared into the great mouse graveyard in the sky.

They know about my clutter.

What does this all have to do with training and getting in shape? Well I’m glad you asked that question! You see, in my example today, it was the case of the missing mouse – buried somewhere in a mess of boxes or quite possibly tossed out by accident. In the game of life, it’s other “stuff” which cause us to lose sight of the value in things, especially our health – we take a lot for granted and become bogged down with lots of other clutter, be it work, school, or just life in general. For many of us, this clutter keeps us from seeing the value of being healthy – we take it for granted until we have a medical concern which becomes our priority.

As March progresses and we approach the vernal equinox (spring), take some time to clear the clutter which may be taking up your valuable mental, emotional, and physical resources. Re-establish your health as your number one priority – after all (and you’ve heard me say this before), what good are you as an employee, spouse, or parent if you’re not in the best possible shape you can be in? How good will you be and what good will you be in a year, 5 years, or 10 years from now? Take care of yourself so you can can take care of those things which are most important to you. Don’t take your health for granted – avoid having it become the case of the missing mouse!

So, keep working hard – it may be months after the New Year now, but every day is a good day to start doing something healthy for yourself!
